About Alba Margarita

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Alba Margarita spent her childhood being hypnotized by the images she saw in any art books that came her way. The hallucinatory images she encountered sometimes trickled out onto her waking life, but she was stoic enough to keep these to herself. After a series of synchronistic magical events, she ended up in Chicago, IL where she sowed her way as an artist's muse and model, until finally the hallucinations from the past bid her to put the robe back on and do art herself.

About the artwork

My artwork can be best described as "luminous darkness." Through my work, I convey inner visions and channeled messages that cannot be expressed with words, as well as exorcise anger, resentments, anxieties, and even celebrations about personal breakthroughs, joys and transcendent and liminal experiences. Painting on black surfaces conveys a sense of coaxing out the beauty and depth from out of the hidden, shadowy side of my psyche. I am deeply inspired by female surrealists like Remedios Varo, Lenonora Carrington, Leonor Fini and others: I feel that womanhood is and always has been a deeply surreal experience, rife with uncertainty, danger, witchcraft, sensuality, love, intuition, carnage, and a sense of repressed Goddesshood.
